New for 2012....Adjust out that RATTLE
One of the unique features of the ADEM 2 is the ability to make adjustments on the fly or completely remove the mast, all without tools. This is a real convenience and I'm sure has led a number of customers to purchase the ADEM 2 over competing products.
The greatest disadvantage of a removable design is however, the potential for rattles. Any time a component on a bicycle is not bolted down, it will probably make noise when the road get rough. I have fought a very frustrating battle to hold the tolerances between the mast and support channel very tight. Sometimes I've won but often clearances were just loose enough to allow rattling.
I'M THROUGH FIGHTING!!!
All ADEM 2's now include a small nylon-tipped set screw in the side of the support channel to allow the rattles to be adjusted out. Simply, snug down the set screw with the mast installed to silence the rattle. The resulting fit will make the mast insertion snug, but that is how I have always tried to make the fit. PLEASE NOTE the word SNUG. Do not over-tighten the screw or the plastic threads will strip out.
Also, please note that the set screw IS NOT METRIC. The availability of metric fasteners in the US is poor and their price is significantly higher than SAE threads. The installed set screw requires a 3/32 inch allen wrench (not included).
Even with the set screw properly adjusted, you may still notice some BUZZING when on a rough road and your head is not on the headrest. This is natural. Any long thin cantilevered beam will resonate. The buzzing however is not nearly as annoying as the rattle.
